Karen Whiteread
Karen is an artist based in London. She arrived in Durness already inspired by the landscape and community of the area. Working with the young people Karen was able to transform the digital studio into a dark room and use everyday objects, such as cans and matchboxes, to make pinhole cameras. She has also documented the current Mackay families who live in the area, producing an archive of photographic portraits.
Karen worked with the young people of the area making a moving image work that reflected their lives within this unique environment. This was shown as a projection onto the historic Balnakeil House, traditional seat of the Mackay clan, as part of a public event that attracted a large audience. The audience were also treated by the artist to both a feast for the eyes and a literal feast afterwards in the village hall when curry was served to the whole community.
