Neil Fuller
Neil is a stone carver based in Durness. His work ranges from large scale public pieces of work to more intimate works using local stone and materials from further afield. His residency, as part of the Virtual Mackay Project, offered the opportunity to work with living rock out in the landscape. Neil was tasked with producing some form of stone seating. Using a dry diamond cutting and polishing system powered by generator he was able to go out into the landscape, taking local teenagers, and selecting rocks at each of the sites that inspired him.
The rock seats are a low impact form of environmental seating. They don’t stand out or impose themselves, they wont need maintenance and you wont find them an eyesore.
Each seat is an individual window to the colours within the landscape.
The geology of the area is unique and the range of rocks across the sites means that walkers and art viewers are able to find these polished works and interact with them within the landscape itself, enjoying the variables of weather, season and life around the site.
Neil worked with the young people within the project, teaching skills and producing a moving image work that reflected their experience of the residency.
