BEVERLEY CARPENTER is Artistic Director of the virtual mackay project and is involved with selecting artists to spend time in Durness as well as managing the running of the studio and associated facilities.

'When I first came to Durness as an artist in residence myself I was both fascinated and alarmed by the landscape and isolation from the urban environment. I set up the digital arts studio as a sustainable resource alongside the film club and began to instigate some exchanges of ideas between the young people and artists of Sutherland and those in London and Cambridge. This resulted in visits and residencies that have addressed some issues and produced creative responses way beyond my expectations.

I have found the environment in Sutherland to be unique with a hospitable and artistic community who are keen to support inclusion and innovation. I have seen a big change in the role of the arts in this area within a short time and the potential for digital art and internet development with the rest of the UK and beyond is enormous.
The studio increasingly attracts young people, artists and visitors with whom it is a great pleasure to work. People find Durness a unique place to creatively grow and change. Change is an integral part of art, it moves, shifts and shapes new paths and potential for everyone it touches.
